Revenge on the bakewells
Flora London Marathon 2008

Derek Cawston
last year as a Marathon Virgin, many of you(unfortunately) will recall that i was beaten home by a whole host of comedy runners, the most humiliating of which was the two Bakewell tarts captured on film by my mother! see att pic (thanks mum)
the final straw was bumping into an old school friend who i hadnt seen in years who was all too aware of my Bakewell nightmare.having considered, name change, emigration ,plastic surgery etc to escape my shame. I am pleased to report that Orchid have given me the opportunity to run the London Marathon again in 2008 to right these wrongs.
So why should you spend your hard earned dosh on sponsoring me on my quest to beat the bakewells? Well Orchid's bit will be at the bottom of this page and they will explain what they do.
i obviously have a personal involvement with Orchid via my son Stefan but cancer can happen to anyone and I know that the sooner it is treated the better the outcome, so the "know your balls, check em out" campaign is vital and any money raised will enable this to be even more high profile.
Or alternatively you can sponsor me in the hope that yet more embarrasing cartoon characters beat me and you can all have a laugh at my expense!! however whatever your reasons please sponsor me and dont forget to gift aid it!!
Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent the charity will receive an extra 28% at no cost to you.
Thank you for your support.

A message from Orchid Cancer
Orchid exists to save men's lives from testicular, prostate and penile cancers through pioneering research and promoting awareness.
37,000 men will be diagnosed with a male specific cancer this year.
Orchid Events – Why not run a marathon or 10k for us, cycle through Essex or from London to Paris, trek to Kilimanjaro, join in our flagship Men in Pants walk, jump out of a plane or simply organise a BBQ on our behalf. Whatever you decide to do, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Other ways to get involved - support our Checked Out campaign and buy our ribbon pin badge. Engage your company through corporate fundraising, or help us to build links with trusts and charitable organisations. Why not make a donation or set up a standing order.

About Men’s Cancer - Incidence of male-specific cancers is growing yet still too little is known about them; their causes, treatments available and most important how to recognise early signs. As with most cancers, male-specific cancers are easier to treat if diagnosed early. Men should not die because of ignorance or embarrassment.

Awareness – Orchid’s ‘Know Your Balls – Check’ Em Out’ DVD won an Excellence in Oncology Award from Pfizer and the British Oncological Association in 2007, and has now been distributed free to every school in the UK with boys aged 15-16. Watch the film.

Research – Orchid funded research has resulted in better treatment for male cancer patients as well as offering significant potential for improving their survival and quality of life. Find out more about our research programmes.

The difference your donation could make:
Every £1 raised gets us nearer to our goal of saving men’s lives. We hope that this shopping list will give you an idea of how we use the funds raised by our supporters to fight male cancer.

£15 - could provide a testicular cancer DVD resource pack for a school nurse, health centre, prison or youth club – reaching more than 500 boys over 5 years – saving at least one life
£50 - could provide 2 month’s supply of pipettes, essential for laboratory tests for cell culture funded by Orchid
£100 - could pay for the costs of an Orchid speaker giving a life saving lecture on male cancer – we want to go further afield, more often!
