In September 2003 Kate Coles was diagnosed with cancer of the colon. While she was having a scan as an in-patient, she overheard the doctor tell a colleague that they did not have use of a certain piece of medical equipment because they could not afford it. So it was that Kate decided she should do something positive and with all the goodwill and support from her family and friends, and set up KatCanDo. It is a local charity set up to improve the treatment and care of cancer patients in the Surrey/Hampshire area. We help organisations such as Frimley Park Hospital, St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and Basingstoke Hospital to purchase equipment and services not always provided by the NHS. The aims of KatCanDo are: 1)to assist and contribute to the well-being, health and treatment of all cancer patients regardless of the cancer site or origin, 2) to provide funding for diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative equipment and other resources related to cancer treatment that are not automatically provided by the NHS, 3) to improve the services needed by cancer patients so that they benefit from the most up-to-date technology, treatment and facilities 4) to provide funding for staff training and teaching aids, 5) help to provide amenities for the comfort of cancer patients and the terminally ill patients. We have purchased many items including 4 artificial larynxes for patients with head and neck cancer, Sentinel Node Probe which is used in the treatment of breast cancer, funding a Palliative Care Reflexology Service for cancer patients, purchase of Blood-analysing machines for the use on patients suffering from leukemia and lymphatic cancers, Ultrasound Probe which will enable early and more specific diagnosis of prostate cancer, Blood Analysers for the Haematology Units at Frimley Park and Farnham Hospitals.
