Mitu & Maherunesa

Hello and Welcome from Mitu & Maherunesa

The Great Kilimanjaro Climb 2010

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. We're Mitu & Maherunesa Khandaker, founders of charitable project Arohon. The aim is, quite simply, to try to make the world a more awesome place for others, particularly through focusing on eliminating poverty, promoting education, and empowering women.

We’re climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, trying to raise at least £5000 in sponsorship - and every penny will go towards establishing a brand new education and community centre for women and girls in rural Bangladesh, in an area where women wanting to pursue their own careers face much cultural opposition.

ATTENTION: Breadpig are now matching every pound, dollar, or euro you donate till we reach £5000! Please do give generously. We salute you, Breadpig!

Please watch the video for more information:

In case you're not already convinced, investing in women and girls has been shown to have far reaching effects in helping the climb out of poverty. From The Girl Effect, this wonderful factsheet has lots of lovely statistics to show us this.

We are already climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to convince you, but we have a long way to go to raise the funds we need to build and maintain our first project, so we're absolutely thrilled to have the help of Breadpig, who are matching every donation you make between now and the climb in September!

TARGET: £5000 (at the very least!)

Note: The 'GRAND TOTAL' has now been updated to reflect the donation-matching from Breadpig. Please keep donating till we SMASH our target!

About Arohon

Arohon is a new charity founded by sisters Mitu & Maherunesa Khandaker, with the general aim of making the world a more awesome place to be. We're seeking to empower poor people in developing countries by providing them with the basic resources needed to climb out of poverty, and we're doing this one project at a time. We believe that by implementing improved sanitation, housing, healthcare and education, the world's most vulnerable people can finally lift themselves out of poverty. Indeed, our name, 'Arohon', is the Bengali word for 'climb'.

For our first project, we're seeking to help a grassroots organisation in Bangladesh, who have, for the past 13 years, been fighting to promote education in the rural area in which they're based. However, they need your support to be able to continue to do so. They wish to improve their library beyond a small, one-room tin building, and continue to support scholarships for children who would otherwise be forced to give up their education due to poverty. In addition to all this, they are also seeking to establish a brand new women's education centre, to empower adult women to realise that more doors are open to them than they think.Your donations will help them to achieve all of this and more, and what's more, because Arohon is working closely with the organisation, we'll be video blogging as much of the process as possible – so you can see the real impact YOUR money can make to those who really need it!
