Hello and Welcome from JO GUALANO

THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY FUNDRAISING PAGE
VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON 25th APRIL 2010

A FINAL WORD......on a memorable day

A couple of weeks ago I would have been mortified to admit that my first marathon would take me 6:04 however, having swallowed my pride and walked the route on Sunday (...for 14 miles carrying a bucketful of money weighing in at a massive 20kg* ie 1 x Luca!) I feel thoroughly privileged and proud to have even participated in such an amazing sporting event, thanks to the spirit of the crowds, the carnival atmosphere and of course the 3 big smiles that were waiting for me at the finish line!
I have so many wonderful memories: from the children throwing handfuls of Easter eggs to the endless jelly babies and "high fives", even a shot of vodka & tonic at mile 10 and a cheeky "peck on the cheek" (for a fiver!) at mile 12 when the bucket broke (so paper money became my "currency of choice"); to the privilege of walking alongside the HelpforHeroes soldiers and so many other truly brave participants.
Fantastically, already in excess of £1000.00 has been raised thanks to your generosity which will make a huge difference to the work of this small but crucially important charity that supports those families affected by cleft lip and or palates.

On behalf of myself & CLAPA thank you again, Jo
http://www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/8127327.Weary__but_proud_to_have_run_marathon/?ref=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
* a massive £240.00!

UPDATE 19th April: Very sadly I am having to withdraw from the "racing" element of the Marathon, having sustained a torn calf muscle toward the end of my training programme and which is still too painful to run on. However, I am determined to channel my personal disappointment into positive action and so will use my place to walk the route on Sunday in order to raise extra funds and awareness for CLAPA. Watch out for my ballons and blue bucket! With heartfelt thanks for any support you can offer - Jo x
Yes its true! I have been lucky (?) enough to secure a ballot place for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon www.virginlondonmarathon.com/ and will be running in support of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association, CLAPA. (as well as action medical research via offline donations www.action.org.uk who were kind enough to take a chance on a "running novice" before the ballot results were announced)
Why the London Marathon?
Having built up my running over the last few years I feel its now time to have a go at the "big one!"
Why CLAPA?
Anybody visiting this page will undoubtedly know my gorgeous Bella (now aged 8) who was born with a submucosal cleft palate http://www.clapa.com/medical/article/328/ As a baby this caused her feeding, hearing and speech difficulties. As new parents this was distressing for Mario and I to observe, particularly as these symptoms were never linked with any sort of anatomical palate abnormaity until she was aged 3. Happily, after corrective surgery and her hard work with dedicated speech therapists at Salisbury District Hospital she is now a 100% success story!
Why donate?
The Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) are a small highly specialist charity who's work provides invaluable support to the children and families affected by cleft lip and or palates. One in 600-700 children in the UK is born with a cleft lip and or palate, so even if you are not directly affected by cleft lip and palate, you will probably know someone who is.
If my efforts on 25th April go some small way to support raising awareness for submucosal cleft palates through CLAPA's work, then as a family we will feel privileged that we have used the opportunity to give something back to this charity from whom we have benefited.
How to donate?
Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent the charity will receive an extra 28% at no cost to you.

Finally, a huge thank you for your support, if you can't afford a donation send me an amusing note of encouragement to get me through those dark days of training ahead........

Many thanks to you all for taking time to read this,
