The William Wates Memorial Tru ...
Hello and Welcome from Simon Pope
Tour de Force 2012
I DID IT!!!
I completed every stage, often clocking up more mileage than the pro's as we rode to and from our hotels. It's been the most amazing experience and I feel very privileged to have been able to take part.
The support from the Wates family throughout the ride has been outstanding, they are such genuine people. The work of WWMT is absolutely inspiring and so I have now set my fundraising target as £2161 or £1 for every mile of the Tour route.
So what's it all about? Well, it's been described as "The greatest sporting test in the world"
This summer I plan to cycle the entire route of the 2012 Tour de France, stage for stage, exactly a week ahead of the professionals. All 3479 kilometres or 2161 miles of it (sounds better already!). Oh, then there's the small matter of the 25 mountain level
1, level 2 and HC climbs to contend with.
Bradley Wiggins says:
"Mental toughness is not something you can train at, it comes with experience. I have got better at it over the years but you seriously need it for the Tour. The length of it is mind blowing, i mean, if you look at it as a whole before you start - you will just give up"
Simon Pope says
This is an amazing opportunity, an epic challenge and some say complete lunacy, but all in aid of a great charity, one that seriously changes peoples lives.
Any amount you can give to support me is greatly appreciated and I hope you agree that the challenge and pain is worthy of your donations to this extremely worthwhile cause!
Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent you will boost your donation.
Thank you so much for your support.
About The William Wates Memorial Trust (Tour de Force 2012)
The William Wates Memorial Trust is a grants giving registered charity set up in 1998 with a mission to help disadvantaged young people fulfil their potential, and stay away from a life of crime, using the mediums of sports, arts and education. The Trust exists to celebrate the life of William Wates (1977- 1996) who was tragically killed when travelling in South America. His family set up the trust to shine some light into the lives of young people who have not had the advantages that Will enjoyed and we feel the aims of the trust reflect where his interests would have been if he was alive today. Since 1998 the Trust has donated just over £1M and helped over 8,000 disadvantaged young people fulfil their potential. Please have a look at our website www.wwmt.org to find out more about the amazing charities that we have supported.
On Saturday 23rd June, 2012 the Tour de Force riders will leave Liege in Belgium and cycle the 2012 route of The Tour de France, staying a week ahead of the professionals, and finishing in Paris on the 15th July nearly 3,500km later. This will be an epic challenge for everyone who takes part, whether they are cycling one, two or twenty stages. All the cyclists will go above and beyond their personal limits, requiring herculean levels of stamina, mental strength and humour. They will battle through adversity in the form of sleep deprivation, awful weather, aching bodies and km after km of challenging terrain! Please support our cyclists generously. They will earn every penny of your sponsorship!
