Hello and Welcome from Mark Johnson

Virgin London Marathon 2010

UPDATED - 28/04/10

Hello!

Well I've done it!! Here is the story of my London Marathon 2010!!...

I had set myself a target of completing the marathon in 5 hours which I was starting to think might be a bit ambitious for me but I wanted something to aim for and to push myself. Thankfully the weather was kind - nothing like the temperatures that were forecast and there were even showers at the start but nothing too heavy.

We crossed the start line at 10.04am and the first few miles flew by! The crowds were unbelievable - people shouting my name, kids giving me high fives, other kids holding out sweets and women handing out oranges!! The atmosphere was unbelievable and this continued for the entire 26.2 miles! I ran over Tower Bridge - amazing!! - and soon reached the half way point feeling great!

Things quickly began to get pretty tough after that though and by mile 18 I was really struggling! By around mile 20 I could hardly walk let alone run but I kept reminding myself about the reasons for doing this - whatever pain I was in was nothing compared to that that my Wife and countless other women that have suffered ectopic pregnancies have been through. I also kept thinking about all the people that have sponsored me and so I tried to keep going.

By mile 23 I had almost given up hope of being able to reach my target of finishing in under 5 hours but the crowds on the Embankment were amazing and with my parents cheering me on I managed to eventually struggle over the finish line in 4 hours 54 mins and 17 secs!

It was a truly amazing and fantastic experience - something I will never forget. But it was also very emotional and both physically and mentally challenging.

I just want to say another huge thankyou to everyone that has sponsored me and sent me good luck messages. It means so much to me and as you can see I have raised nearly £1,800 which I am so grateful for and I know the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust will be too.

Thanks again,
Mark.

Hello!

Thank you for checking out my fundraising page.

Yes, its true, I've officially lost my marbles and I'm taking part in this years Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 25th April to raise money for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust and would really welcome your support.

Ectopic pregnancy affects around 1 in 80 pregnancies in the UK and is a potentially life threatening condition. For many others it involves considerable emotional and physical pain. There are at least 6.500 emergency admissions for the condition in England alone, and some believe the number of cases of ectopic pregnancy may number more than 30.000 per year in the UK. The number of ectopic pregnancies and deaths (approximately 5 per year) caused by this condition has not fallen in the past 20 years - in fact the incidence is rising.

As you may know it is something that has affected my family directly and at the time it happened something Suzanne and I knew very little about. We were desperate to find out as much as we could about this condition but there was no information in the hospital and the nurses and doctors either wouldn’t or couldn’t answer many of our questions. We then found the EPT website which was helpful, informative and answered all of our questions. We also visited the message boards where we found comfort and support from others who had been through similar experiences. I would like to be able to give something back to the EPT and by running the marathon I hope to play my part in raising awareness of this potentially life threatening condition while at the same time raising funds towards the continued work of the trust. It won't be fast, it won't be easy and it's going to be painful but I know that Suzanne and I would have been very much left in the dark without the help and support of the EPT and for this I will always be very grateful.

I am therefore asking you to please support this worthwhile charity by sponsoring me.

Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent the charity will receive an extra 28% at no cost to you.

Thank you for your support.
Mark.

About The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, relies entirely on third party fundraising and personal donation to provide its services. £5 enables us to review, print and send out by first class post, 7 information leaflets, to people who really need to read them. £20 will run our professionally staffed helpline for an hour. £100 will maintain our information website for a week and because our overheads are so very low and our services delivered by trained professional volunteers in most instances, your donations really do fund our services.

Ectopic pregnancy, is potentially a life-threatening condition. For many it involves considerable emotional and physical pain, surgery or powerful medical treatments. The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust provides support to those affected by the trauma associated with ectopic pregnancy and seeks to relieve the emotional and physical distress and provide ongoing support, through a programme if information and education, delivered via a helpline, through information leaflets, a detailed website, support groups, training events, tutorials and a variety of medically moderated and overseen message forums. The Trust's overall aim is to raise awareness of the risk of ectopic pregnancy amongst women of childbearing age, and amongst the medical profession who care for them as well as the general public.
