Help for Heroes
Thank you to all the sponsors, friends and family who supported this event. I am also indebted to my companion, Will Young, for not only suggesting this “barking mad” challenge but seeing it through to the end with me.
As planned, we departed on the 16th April and returned 16 days later (1st May) having completed the 1500 mile journey around the coastal and mountainous roads of Ireland. This took us through some 20 counties and allowed us to take in the most beautiful views. We encountered a few "hairy moments" along the way, such as when the bike racks broke on both bikes, and when niggling injuries began to turn nasty. However, we managed to stay calm and get through these obstacles. We were very lucky with the weather too, experiencing sunny days pretty much all the way. We even got sun burnt on the second day!
No matter how exhausted we got, our morale was an important contributor to our success. I'm so pleased that we managed to complete this event it means an awful lot to have played a part in raising money for H4H's. This one was for you Ben, and for all the other heroes too!
Finally, I wish to thank Will’s girlfriend, Alice, for her constant support along the way and coming to our aid in Arklow. This really helped us to pull through. In case you are interested, Will rode for a different charity, the Charlie Sumption Memorial Fund. He has some fantastic photos which can be accessed, along with more info about this charity, at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=williamyoung
Once again thank you and I hope you enjoy the photos.
About Help for Heroes
The charity Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 in order to provide direct, practical support to those wounded, sick or injured in the line of duty since 9/11. All the funds raised to date are either allocated or spent on the direct, practical support of those wounded in the current conflicts. To date, H4H has funded a variety of projects including the £8m Rehabilitation Complex at Headley Court, a new £3.5m treatment centre for Combat Stress, adaptive adventure training through the Battle Back programme and the creation of a £6m Quick Reaction Fund to support individuals in need.
