Help for Heroes
In May 2010, I set myself a personal challenge to raise £40K over a 5 year period - 19 months later and the total sits at £24,500. This challenge came as a result of recovering from a spinal fusion back operation in July 2008 after years of pain having fractured my spine. In July 2011, I completed the first of my challenges - climbing to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The trip was a once in a lifetime experience and it was wonderful to put the body through its paces, and finish the challenge in one piece. That challenge raised £15,600 for Help for Heroes.
So, 2012 saw me take on 3 challenges. I ran the Reading Half Marathon in April and later that month the 2012 London Marathon. In May 2012, I took on the Inca Trail to trek to the top of Machu Picchu in Peru. All challenges required me to get really fit and have realised a total fundraising total of £32K and rising for Help for Heroes. Only £8K to go !
There is a good reason why I am continuing my support for Help for Heroes. Not only do I admire what they have achieved in short 3.5 year period (raising over £100 million) but I admire the enthusiasm of the team and the inspirational attitude of the people they are helping. Having climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, I know that the challenge is tough and demanding both mentally and physically. It is relentless on the body with very little recovery time in between. In 2010, 6 soldiers took on Kili (4 with one arm, 1 with one leg, and 1 soldier blinded whilst on active service). Having scaled those heights, I don't know how they did it but I know that their determination was never far from my mind in order to achieve my goal. They are truly inspirational.

About Help for Heroes
Help for Heroes offers comprehensive support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses whilst serving our country. This is provided through grants to individuals, other Service charities, capital build projects and our four Recovery Centres across the UK, in Catterick, Colchester, Tidworth and Plymouth. These will offer support for life. The money raised by the hugely generous public has been used to support our wounded, but there is still so much more to do. Soldiers, sailors and airmen who are injured today will still need our support tomorrow and in the days that follow, for the rest of their lives. They are still battling and we won't let them battle alone.
