Help for Heroes
The Hero Walk - Avebury to Stonehenge 2011
Hello Everybody!
Thanks for visiting my fund-raising page.
Mission Accomplished!
On Sunday 26th June 2011 I and two friends did the Hero Walk; a 26-mile (42km) sponsored walk from Avebury to Stonehenge, fund-raising for Help for Heroes - the charity for UK service men and women wounded in recent conflicts.
I am delighted to be able to tell you that I and my walking companions (Tony Perry and Clive Garnham) successfully completed the challenge. I've uploaded a
GPS track-log of the walk showing the route and some stats.
We set out from Avebury at 08:04 and reached the finishing post 9 hours and 20 minutes later, at 17:24. Including stops our average speed was around 2.7mph. With the stops taken out our total walking time was a little over 8 hours, giving a "moving average"
across the day of 3.2mph.
The day started off quite misty, which enabled us to bang in a good few miles in the early morning, before it got too hot. However the heat and sun became a significant factor throughout the day, particularly the afternoon which was spent crossing Salisbury
Plain with very little cover. Fortunately there was a good breeze most of the time, and the organisers had done a great job of setting up frequent checkpoints for water bottle refills - I went through about one-and-a-half litres of water in the last 5 mile
stretch. It was really beautiful walking, though I must confess I was beginning to ache quite a bit by the time we finished!
I'm a keen walker, but this was the first time I'd ever tried to tackle the
full marathon distance in one day. If you are able to then
please
make a donation, to help "the blokes", and make the effort worthwhile!
Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent then Help for Heroes will receive an extra 25% at no cost to you.
Thanks for your support!
About Help for Heroes
The charity Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 in order to provide direct, practical support to those wounded, sick or injured in the line of duty since 9/11. All the funds raised to date are either allocated or spent on the direct, practical support of those wounded in the current conflicts. To date, H4H has funded a variety of projects including the £8m Rehabilitation Complex at Headley Court, a new £3.5m treatment centre for Combat Stress, adaptive adventure training through the Battle Back programme and the creation of a £6m Quick Reaction Fund to support individuals in need.
